Date of creation and purposes of the WMY 2000 committee
The committee was appointed by the executive committee of the European Mathematical Society in its meeting in Hamburg June 30-July 2, 1995. The chairman was appointed in a letter of October 31, 1995.

The letter of mission of the committee contains the following points:

  • Find, coordinate and initiate suitable mathematical activities supported by the European Mathematical Society to take place in the year 2000. The activities should be common to several European countries, hopefully all, and best of all, related to the rest of the world.

  • Help with possible ideas to organize suitable mathematical activities in the individual European countries. Some of these should be carried out in the year 2000 but could also prove useful independent of the World Mathematical Year 2000.
