On this page, you will find models of three dimensional shells and horns, which have been done by coiling a Bézier curve around a helicospiral, as described on the Spirals patterns in shells and horns page. Using Mathematica gives us a mathematical model of the shell, but in order to obtain a good graphical result, we have exported the shell in an a 3D program, 3DStudio Max. The following pictures are the result of this procedure. Click on them to enlarge.
Astele Armillatum | Greater Kudu Horns | Epitonium Scalare | Penion Mandarinus |
Thatcheria Mirabilis | Ficus Filosa | Nautilus Pompilus | Wild Sheep Horns |
In the following applet, you can choose a shell and use the mouse to move it in 3D.
These mathematica applets will download some source files which can have a size of 2MB. Thus it could take some time before the shells is displayed.
